新年あけましておめでとうございます。
福岡市長の高島宗一郎です。
ウェイン・ブラウン市長をはじめ、オークランドの皆さまにおかれましては輝かしい新年をお迎えのこととお喜び申し上げます。福岡市とオークランド市の交流は、1979年の博多港とオークランド港の姉妹港締結をきっかけに始まり、友好訪問団や少年ラグビーチームの訪問などを通じて育まれました。両市の関係をより深めるため、1986年に姉妹都市となりました。
オークランド市のウェスタン・スプリングスにある福岡市姉妹都市庭園は、両市の友好の象徴として長く親しまれています。庭園の維持管理にご協力いただいているフクオカフレンドシップガーデングループの皆さま、そして姉妹都市交流をご支援いただいている在オークランド日本国総領事館の皆さまに深く感謝申し上げます。
本年、福岡市とオークランド市は姉妹都市締結40周年を迎えます。
これまで青少年交流やスタートアップ分野での連携などを進めてきましたが、若い世代が異なる文化や言語に触れる機会は、将来のグローバルな活躍につながる重要な取り組みです。40周年を契機に、高校生の相互派遣などの青少年交流を拡大してまいります。
福岡市では、都心部の再開発によって、100年に一度の街のアップデートが進んでいます。一方で、食や屋台文化、海や山などの自然といった福岡ならではの魅力は今も息づいています。進化する街並みと変わらない魅力を併せ持つ福岡市に、ぜひお越しいただけたらと思います。
今後も両市の発展のために国際交流の輪が広がることを祈念いたします。

1986年に姉妹都市提携を結んだオークランド市と福岡市の関係は、40年にわたり着実に発展を続けてきました。
都市と都市の連携は、文化的理解を深めるだけでなく、経済成長や国際的なつながりを生む重要な原動力となっています。
オークランド市はニュージーランド経済の中核を担う多文化都市であり、福岡市とはスタートアップ、イノベーション、持続可能性、地域コミュニティの分野などにおいて協力を深めています。両市が共有するラグビーやセーリングといった文化的親和性も、関係をより強固なものにしています。40周年を迎える本年、これまで築いてきた確かな基盤を礎に、次の世代へとつながる新たな都市間協力をさらに発展させていくことを期待しています。

In 1986, Auckland and Fukuoka City signed a sister city partnership to foster greater cultural understanding and promote culture, tourism and trade. Forty years on, that relationship has continued to thrive and endure.
Now, as we look forward to celebrating this special milestone, it’s an opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come and acknowledge the strengthening of our city-to-city ties across a multitude of areas, which will set us up for future generations.
Auckland is the economic engine room of the country. We are a third of the national population, contributing around 40% of the national economy. We are a cultural melting pot.
I’ve always been a big advocate of city-to-city relationships as they help us build and maintain connections. As such, Auckland Council has international partnerships with cities and countries around the world that focus on areas of shared interest.
It has become evident that economic growth is between cities, not countries, and this is underpinned by our partnership with Fukuoka where we see the potential to work collaboratively on innovation, high-tech startups, sustainability and community wellbeing. We also have the benefit of our mutual love of rugby and sailing.
Our close ties are highlighted by the fact that the Fukuoka City Startup team participated in Auckland’s inaugural Startup Week late last year, which attracted some 4,000 delegates. We also have a Memorandum of Understanding with Fukuoka City that gives Auckland companies access to establish a presence or attract international investment in Japan.
This collaboration will undoubtedly bring significant benefits for both our cities.
I look forward to welcoming Mayor Takashima to Auckland as part of the anniversary celebrations later this year, and continuing to strengthen and build on the foundation established 40 years ago.
