TAKE YOUR MEDICATIONS WITH YOU

If you’re moving out of your home or leaving Christchurch, remember to take your regular medications and prescriptions with you.

FREE GP CARE UNTIL TOMORROW NIGHT

Canterbury residents with urgent medical needs can visit a GP free of charge until tomorrow night. It’s important you phone your own GP first – if they’re not open, a nurse will answer the call and direct you to the nearest GP practice that’s open.

If the phones are not working, then visit your nearest after-hours medical centre.

The Pegasus 24-hour medical centre in Bealey Avenue is open tonight and the after-hours clinics at Moorhouse Medical Centre and the Riccarton Clinic will be open tomorrow between 8 am and 8pm.

LOOKING FOR AN INJURED FAMILY MEMBER WHO MAY BE IN HOSPITAL?

Relatives looking for injured family members at Christchurch Hospital should go to the Great Escape Café in the main foyer where a relative centre has been set up and there are social workers and police available.

MEALS ON WHEELS NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK

Meals on wheels are not available for the rest of the week – if you have elderly neighbours or people who live alone, please check on them and help out if you can with meals and support.

FOOD SAFETY

Members of the public and food business operators should phone the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) on 0800 693 721 (0800 NZFSA1) if they have any enquiries.

The Christchurch domestic terminal has reopened. International services are intended to recommence from 1200 today (23 February).

Movement of visitors out of city
Civil Defence is giving visitors to Christchurch the opportunity to relocate to Wellington.

The decision to relocate visitors has been made in order to free up accommodation in Christchurch and also reunite people with friends and family. This will also assist with accommodation shortages in the city. Flights started leaving Christchurch early this morning.

Visitors are being flown to Wellington by the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Any visitors to Christchurch who want to leave the city should make their way to collection points at the Burnside High School welfare centre, corner of Memorial Avenue and Greers Road or the welfare centre at North Hagley Park. Please note, do not go to the airport directly if you wish to be on these flights. Please go only to the collection points.

Continue to boil water.

Waste water (sewerage)
There are reports of broken water pipes and associated flooding.

Police reinforcements
Police officers including those skilled in disaster victim identification roles are travelling to Christchurch as part of the emergency response.

About 200 staff have been mobilised as part of the immediate response with another 130 expected to travel in the next few days to support their Canterbury colleagues and other agencies.

Police are urging people to stay out of the Christchurch central city business area. Overnight rain is not helping the situation but emergency services and disaster response agencies are continuing all possible efforts to search buildings in the CBD and other parts of the city.

Schools
Schools across Christchurch city are closed.

People in the affected area should:
• Expect aftershocks. Each time one is felt, drop, cover, and hold on.
• Check yourself first for injuries and get first aid if necessary before helping injured or trapped persons.
• Assess your home or workplace for damage. If the building appears unsafe get everyone out. Use the stairs, not an elevator and when outside, watch out for fallen power lines or broken gas lines. Stay out of damaged areas.
• Look for and extinguish small fires if it is safe to do so. Fire is a significant hazard following earthquakes.
• Listen to the radio for updated emergency information and instructions.
• Do not overload phone lines with non-emergency calls.
• Do not use any lifts anywhere in Christchurch
• Help people who require special assistance - infants, elderly people, those without transportation, families who may need additional help, people with disabilities, and the people who care for them.

Detailed safety advice will come from local authorities and emergency services in the area. People should act on it promptly. MCDEM, local civil defence authorities and scientific advisors are closely monitoring the situation.

This advisory has been issued to all local civil defence authorities, emergency services, other agencies and media.
